- Solar activity is low. Geomagnetic activity has been up a bit,
- peaking with an A index of 26 on August 14. Solar flux should stay
- around 80 for the next month, but there will be a slight peak near
- 85 around August 23 through 28. Geomagnetic conditions may become
- unsettled again around September 8 through 10.
-
- Low solar activity means that the Maximum Usable Frequency will be
- low over most paths. 20 and 30 meters are probably the best overall
- bands for long distance communication.
-
- Sunspot Numbers from August 11 through 17 were 37, 58, 59, 75, 61,
- 64 and 73, with a mean of 61. 10.7 cm flux was 76.7, 80.8, 84.5,
- 88.9, 81.4, 77 and 78, with a mean of 81.
-
- The path projection for this week is from Jacksonville, Florida to
- Chad.
-
- 80 meters should be open from 0000 to 0445z, peaking around 0100 to
- 0130. 40 meters looks good from 2300 to 0530. 30 meters looks best
- from 2200 to 0300, and may possibly open again around 0500 to 0600.
- 20 meters should be open from 1930 to 0100. On many days, 17 meters
- should be open from 1600 to 2300, and on a few days 15 meters may be
- open around 1830 to 2030. 12 and 10 meters do not look good over
- this path at this time.

- Subject: Cushcraft R7. Does it work?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I've had my R7 for more than 3 years now. It went together without any
- problems and I've had no problems tuning it on all advertised bands. I also
- have 3 other friends who have invested in the R7 and had no problems with
- it's construction or tuning. I also have a friend with an R5 who reports the
- same good results. The only complaint that I have with my R7 has nothing to
- do with the antenna or with Cushcraft in general. On 40 meters, there is
- a lot of man-made noise in the vertical orientation. I have just as good
- results with far less noise on my 40 meter dipole as I do my R7. Since 30
- meters is not one of my favorite bands, I regret not purchasing an R5 instead
- of an R7 and pocketing the $100 difference (or investing it in some other
- equipment).

- My R7 has worked perfectly from day one and I am quite pleased with it. I

- heard that there may be troubles with the traps though. I would suggest you
- keep working with Cushcraft , as I feel they will stand behind their product.

- Can anyone out there recommend a TNC control program for my needs?
-
- I have a Compaq Contura 486 (mono) laptop, a PK232MBX (upgraded to latest
- ROM chips), a Kenwood TS450SAT barefoot to an R7 at 40 metrers AGL (about
- 125 feet for those of you in the US).
-
- I work mostly RTTY on 20M, but dabble in the other modes and bands. I
- rarely use non-data modes (ssb, etc). I log to paper then transfer to
- Logic3.
-
- I started with YAPP and did not like it because I had to remember all
- sorts of ROM level commands to make it do things.
-
- I tried PCPAKRATT 5.5 (latest I think) but find that there are too many
- differences between what the same key does in different modes.
-
- I think I would like a program that is very "visual". By that I mean
- something that has on-screen buttons to poke with the mouse to handle
- most of the often-used functions. But, other than YAPP and the AEA
- "kluge", I do not know much (anything) about other control programs.
-
- Well, that's it. Any informed opinion ou there? Dumb question ;^>

- Greg, A free kit would make you beholden?? Come one I would relish

- : So I really don't understand the 1965 story - I mean it took me about

- : I wonder how this could be...
-
-
- It's simple. Some people think in a way that allows them to learn code
- easily and quickly. Most people can do it in a about the same time with
- the same amount of effort. Some people cannot learn code by having
- things "beep" at them.
-
-
- It's the same reason I've been thrown out of music schools :-(
- I can't carry a tune except by rote memorization of the timing and it takes
- months for me to do it.
-
-
- BTW typing has nothing to do with learing code, I can type with a
- modified version of touch typing that requires that I look often at the
- keys. I took touch typing in the late sixties and still can't do it
- right. My brain does not work that way.
-
- I was told by a PhD.D. Speech Therapist that my problem was not that I
- don't have a sense of rhythm, I just can't connect to it. He prescribed
- exercises to help. This was after I passed my 5 wpm test, so I can't
- say if it worked or not.
-
- I find Vassili's claim of learning code in one week as ridiculous as mine. :-)
- He's at the fast end of the curve, I am way out at the slow end.
-
- Code Quick works by making word associations with the letters. I
- cannot recognize dih dih dah dit at any speed, but I can recognize the
- phrase "did i FAIL it" at anything from 3 to 30 wpm. I cannot sustain
- that rate, yet, but I am working on it.
-
-
- It is obvious why my ancestors left germany and became farmers in Lithauania,
- while other members of the family converted to christianity and became a hit
- in the music business.

- Man, you guys are tough! I'm running out of free kits! Seriously, it is
- tough to write stuff for folks of all backgrounds. I think the reason
- we get less trouble from novice builders is that they actually read
- and follow the directions!
- I'll start saving some kits that were sent back for repair by Extras
- and other "30 year" experience builders. I'll send those babies out as
- free kits!
- Best regards! John

- There are two problems with that idea, one for each direction of the link.
- Well, two legal problems, you might also have some political problems with
- local amateurs :-)
-
- First, if you linked the amateur receiver to the 11m transmit, your will
- have to set up the CB radio to automatically transmit when audio is received
- on the amateur receiver, and would then be in violation of 95.419(a), which
- prohibits radio remote control of a CB radio.
-
- Second, if you linked the CB receiver output to the amateur transmit on the
- repeater, you would be in violation of 97.113(e), which prohibits retransmitting
- communications from non-amateur stations (there are some exceptions but CB is
- not included).
